CDN Rockies Trail Running

Selection

Below is a selection of trails that the author considers true classics. These routes have been chosen for a variety of reasons—from stunning scenery and high-quality running surfaces to the overall aesthetic appeal of the terrain.

In the spirit of trail running, loops and point-to-point routes have been prioritized over out-and-backs. Trails are selected where it's possible to run the entire route safely, aside from a few short sections of steep, rocky terrain or exposed ridges where no reasonable alternative exists. If a trail includes such features, they will be noted in the description.

This is by no means an exhaustive list—route possibilities in the Canadian Rockies are nearly limitless. But after more than 20 years of hiking, scrambling, skiing, and climbing throughout the region, I’m confident that the trails listed here represent some of the very best and pass through some of the most spectacular areas. Of course, “best” is totally subjective. If you're willing to backtrack, bushwhack, or tackle some hands-on scrambling or climbing, there are countless other options. For this list, I’ve focused on trails that offer pure running fun.

Each trail includes key information: distance, elevation gain, trail character, and whether it’s a loop, point-to-point, or out-and-back. Stay alert for wildlife, tread lightly, respect the mountains—and above all, enjoy the run.
