Trail Character: Maintained Trail
Trail Type: Loop
Parking: North Interlakes Day Use Area
Running around the Upper Kananaskis Lake is a classic Rockies running experience. The views are exceptional, and the trail itself is well-maintained, providing a great surface for running. The elevation gain is minimal relative to most mountain runs, making it accessible for many runners. And as a bonus, after your run, dipping in the lake is a fantastic way to cool down on a warm summer day.
Navigating the loop is quite easy, and both directions are good options. When deciding which way to go, keep in mind that the north shore of the lake is sunnier and warmer, while the south side is shady and cooler. Catching the morning light from the section between the Northern Interlakes Parking Lot and the Upper Kananaskis Lake Area Parking can also be spectacular.
As the trail goes through both the Northern Interlakes Parking Lot and the Upper Kananaskis Lake Parking Area, both make for good starting points. The GPX track provided below uses the Northern Interlakes Parking Lot as a starting point, but there is no real benefit to starting at either. It should be noted that the GPS track below follows a section of road near the Upper Kananaskis Lake Parking Area, but you can also run trails through the picnic area next to the lake.
