For trail runners and hikers eager to get an early start in the Rockies, Aylmer Lookout offers the perfect mix of scenic beauty and rewarding effort. With breathtaking views over Lake Minnewanka and south-facing slopes that shed snow early in the season, this route is a springtime gem. Despite being an out-and-back trail, it earns its place on this list because of its early accessibility and stunning vantage point.

The trail consists of two distinct sections: running along the north shore of Lake Minnewanka and then climbing up to the lookout. The stretch along the lake is relatively flat for a mountain trail, though it does feature one significant climb and descent just after crossing the first bridge. The climb to the lookout isn’t too steep, making it manageable for most hikers and runners, and the descent is especially fun to run down—flowing smoothly with just enough technical elements to keep it exciting.

If tackling this hike very early in the season, be prepared to possibly turn around before reaching the lookout. The lower trail near the lake may be clear, while the higher sections near the lookout can still hold considerable snow. Additionally, the area around the first bridge often retains ice or hard-packed snow even when the rest of the trail is clear, so bringing traction devices for your shoes is a smart precaution.
