Northover Ridge is a classic running route in the Canadian Rockies that offers stunning scenery and challenging terrain. You will run through pristine meadows, past beautiful lakes, and along sparkling glaciers, while enjoying outstanding panoramic views. If you are looking for the best run in the Kananaskis region, this might be the one.

However, this route should not be underestimated. At 34 km, the route is not exceptionally long, but combined with over 2000m of elevation gain and some tricky sections that require caution and skill this trip can be quite demanding. The trail follows the crest of Northover Ridge, which is narrow and exposed in places. A fall from the ridge could be fatal, so be careful and watch your footing. The ridge, like much of the rock in the Canadian Rockies, is made of friable rock. Therefore, it is advised to proceed slowly and cautiously in this section.

Overall, the route itself poses no real navigational challenges as it is well-traveled and mainly on clearly defined trails. There are a few key junctions, so it is recommended to download a GPS track and bring a map to ensure you are heading in the right direction. Running clockwise or counterclockwise both have their pros and cons and are good options.

It should also be noted that this route travels through some prime grizzly bear habitat, and for that reason, it’s highly recommended to bring bear spray, travel in a group, and follow standard bear safety protocols. The author once saw five grizzly bears on the trail, including a mother and two cubs at Three Isle Lake.
