Trail Type: Loop
Parking: Island Lake Lodge
The Mount Baldy Loop behind Island Lake Lodge is a steep but rewarding trail, ideal for practicing ascents and descents. It’s well maintained and easy to follow, thanks to the lodge’s upkeep. I recommend running it counterclockwise for a slightly more gradual climb, though you’ll face a solid ascent and descent either way. Near the top, there’s a short out-and-back spur to a viewpoint that offers a great payoff for minimal extra effort—spectacular alpine terrain rising behind Island Lake makes for a stunning backdrop.
If the loop alone isn’t enough, there are plenty of ways to extend your run. You can start from a lower parking lot and link up with the Lazy Lizard Trail, the Rail Trail to the Oldgrowth Trail, the access road, or any combination of the many trails in the area. The trail network around Island Lake is extensive and offers lots of flexibility. Just be aware that the access road is often closed to vehicles during peak season, so running in from a more distant trailhead may be necessary. I can personally vouch for all the trails in this area—they’re well maintained and enjoyable.
Running down Lazy Lizard at the end of the day is especially pleasant, though it’s a popular mountain biking route, so keep your eyes and ears open.
One important note: moose are known to frequent this area. My wife and I were once bluff charged by a cow moose protecting her calf on the Rail Trail. While moose encounters like this are rare, they can be terrifying and potentially dangerous, so it’s wise to stay alert and take precautions.
